This is a photograph from a book called ‘Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America” (pub. 2004). The photo is called ‘The lynching of Frank Embree, July 22, 1899, Fayette, MO”

By all reckoning, that makes this barely 113 years old.

There are two other matching photos to the set. The one below, and the one of him hanging, which is too upsetting to post. You can see it (along with others from much later time periods here: http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/omalley/race/four.html)

On Sunday April 22nd, Izlia was arrested by a Medford police officer and was booked into Jackson County Jail. She is currently waiting, in a different jail (in a different county), to be picked up by ICE. ICE will be transferring Izlia to the North West Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington.

Izlia, now 20 years old, was born in Sinaloa, Mexico and arrived to the United States before the age of 2. She has lived in Oregon most of her life and completed the K-12 educational system in 2010. Izlia’s success in sports and in the classroom setting, along with her passion to help others demonstrates the skills needed to ensure her goal of becoming a medical doctor.

As a senior in high school, Izlia was involved in building the foundation for her passion to help others. She returned to her elementary school and assisted students who faced similar situations as her. Izlia believes no one is ever young enough to be instilled with understanding the value of an education.

Izlia is a young girl with a bright future, who has a community who supports her and wants to see her succeed. She deserves to stay in the U.S with her parents and two younger siblings. Sending her back to a country, she has no memory of will not only devastate the family, but puts her life at risk due to the high prevalence of deaths occurring in her home town.

"Consider the pattern of the last decade. With two ruinous wars and a financial collapse to his record, George W. Bush was widely regarded as one of the most disastrous presidents in American history, and at times his public approval numbers sank to the lowest levels ever measured. The sweeping victory of his successor, Barack Obama, represented more a repudiation of Bush and his policies than anything else, and leading political activists, left and right alike, characterized Obama as Bush’s absolute antithesis, both in background and in ideology. This sentiment was certainly shared abroad, with Obama being selected for the Nobel Peace Prize just months after entering office, based on the widespread assumption that he was certain to reverse most of the policies of his detested predecessor and restore America to sanity. Yet almost none of these reversals took place. Instead, the continuity of administration policy has been so complete and so obvious that many critics now routinely speak of the Bush/Obama administration."

More than 6,500 veteran suicides are logged every year — more than the total number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq combined since those wars began.

Food for thought.

“The best judge of whether or not a country is going to develop is how it treats its women. If it’s educating its girls, if women have equal rights, that country is going to move forward. But if women are oppressed and abused and illiterate, then they’re going to fall behind.” ~Barack Obama

With an accomplished, intelligent and sassy woman like Michelle for a wife, and two beautiful daughters soon to come of age, how can he NOT be a feminist?

I don’t understand how anyone could not believe in equality for women, but especially those that have daughters and such. Although I don’t agree with Obama on many things, I applaud him for his work with women’s rights.

Fuck this image. Obama, or any man (except for those who have actually experienced oppression for being trans or dressing in drag) for that reason, can NEVER be a feminist. You can be an ally, yes, but not a feminist.
